STUDENT WINS TOMORROW'S INDUSTRIAL LEADERS AWARD
Mechanical
and Medical Engineering student Rachel Joyce has beaten hundreds of
hopefuls to win £7,500 as part of an engineering awards scheme.
Rachel
(pictured left) is one of 30 of the UK's
most exceptional engineering students to have been chosen by The Royal
Academy of Engineering to join its Engineering Leadership Awards programme.
Twenty-seven per cent of the successful students were female, almost double
the average percentage of females on university engineering courses.
To win the award, Rachel overcame stiff competition from MEng applicants
from universities across the country. She will now receive £7,500 over
three years, to be used to 'accelerate personal and professional development
and training designed to specifically to promote leadership qualities.'
The academy assists and advises each student in the use of his or her
award according to his or her own Personal Development Plan. Each winner
can use the award in the way that will best help their career - this could
be attending a course on presentation skills or travelling abroad to undertake
work placements overseas. Rachel will use part of the award to develop
her language skills.
She said: "I think it is very important to UK industry to be able to communicate
well with people in Europe in order to be able to stay competitive. I
would also like to attend a business course so I could learn more about
the running of companies and to observe cutting-edge developments and
testing in the areas I am interested in.
"I feel very lucky to have won this award and I think, by meeting other
engineers with similar interests, I will be able to share my ideas and,
in turn, receive inspiration from them."
