Lecturer awarded United Nations Fellowship

A lecturer from the Bradford Centre for International Development (BCID) has been awarded a Sabbatical Fellowship at the prestigious United Nations University's World Institute for Development Economic Research (UNU-WIDER), in Helsinki.

Dr Anand Prathivadi Bhayankaram spent three months at UNU-WIDER researching water supply issues for large cities in developing countries.

Anand's research, which focused on the Indian city of Chennai, culminated in the publication of two papers: 'Water 'Scarcity' in Chennai, India', which examines issues of inequality in access to water supply, and 'Consumer Preferences for Water Supply?', which explores ways in which policy makers can consult water consumers on solutions.

Anand said: "Water scarcity in cities like Chennai is often misinterpreted as an abject shortage. A more realistic view may be that water is unevenly distributed. I feel that unless policies that determine access to water supply change, any amount of investment to increase the quantity of water will not improve quality of life for the poor."

Anand's papers can be found at www.wider.unu.edu/publications/discussion-papers.htm
