WAR LITERATURE COURSE

A one-day course on war literature, entitled 'Witnesses of War: Literature of World Wars I & II' gave people an opportunity to look at how writing sought to preserve human dignity, purpose, and creativity in the midst of destruction.

Course Tutor, Ken Smith, said: "Since World War I, writers such as Wilfred Owen and Seigfried Sassoon have been valued for their ability to undercut the propaganda about war and to 'tell it like it is'. Writers are uniquely able to record the actuality, the truth of personal experience, and thus to give meaning and humanity to the events that threaten to overwhelm the individual."
