RESEARCHERS INVESTIGATE METAL DEPOSITION

Matt Hill and Mike Ashmore.Researchers at the University are leading a national research consortium which will investigate the deposition of metals from the atmosphere and their subsequent environmental pathways and impacts.

The consortium has recently been awarded a research contract for £498,000 from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA). Professor Mike Ashmore and Dr Matt Hill will be collaborating with scientists from the Natural Environment and Research Council (NERC) Centre for Ecology and Hydrology's laboratories in Windermere and Huntingdon in the research programme.

The research aims to provide a scientific assessment of the need for further measures to reduce emissions of metals to the atmosphere.

Mike said: "The research aims to explore whether the critical load concept, which has been used so successfully in international negotiations to reduce the impact of acid rain, can be applied to metals."
