UNIVERSITY OF BRADFORD RESEARCH CENTRE PLANS £600,000 EXPANSION

Professor Phil Coates. The University has received an investment of £600,000 to double the size of its world class polymer engineering research centre laboratories.

The expansion of the Interdisciplinary Research Centre (IRC), based at the School of Engineering, is to be funded through HEFCE's Science Research Investment Fund (SRIF).

As well as extending the polymer engineering laboratory, the investment will increase its range of polymer processing equipment, adding new precision injection moulding, extrusion and digital imaging facilities, as well as improving the centre's computer modelling research capabilities.

Head of the IRC, Professor Phil Coates (pictured left), explained that the investment would provide extra space which would enable the centre to expand its research projects, and increase its co-operations, such as those in current large collaborative grants with 12 universities.

He said: "The IRC is one of the UK's most successful postgraduate research centres for polymer processing. It houses around 35 researchers and over the past two years we have received research grant income of £2.75m. This investment will help attract more postgraduate research to Bradford and enable us to take the important next steps in our growth plans."

The IRC laboratory has produced internationally recognised research on polymer processing, polymer theology, process monitoring and control, process analysis, and computer modelling - all of which has application and relevance to the manufacturing industry.
