Estates
& FacilitiesThis map is designed to keep staff and students informed about construction works affecting areas of our estate during the coming months. The University’s capital investment in its estate is continuing with plans set out in the Estate Strategy 2004 – 2014. So far approximately £70m has been spent on the programme and the next two years will see the completion of the major structural changes to the University. The principal projects this summer are as set out below.
In progress to August 2010 – Project Manager: Peter Lydiatt (Ext 5438)
Contractors have secured the perimeter of the building site as they refurbish the complete building, including the addition of a barrel vault roof over the courtyard to form a new enclosed atrium space. The transformed spaces will accommodate Careers, Disabilities, Counselling, Student Union offices, bars and entertainment venues, flexible social learning spaces, roof garden, retail and formal teaching rooms including a large tiered lecture theatre.
In progress to August 2010 – Project Manager: Peter Lydiatt (Ext 5438)
This floor of the library is being converted in phases into an open area with new reception point, book collections and returns, study space/rooms, spaces for relaxing and socialising, exhibition space and a level direct walk through link into the Communal Building. The contractors will work behind hoarding lines progressively through the phases, separated from users of the building.
From April 2010 to July 2011 – Project Manager: Peter McCluskey (Ext3422)
This project will refurbish Horton A, extend it on the eastern elevation opposite Richmond Building and create an additional floor over part of the existing structure. The new accommodation will be of a high standard achieving an improved sustainability performance for the existing building and will enable the relocation of the School from Unity Building onto main campus. The Unity Building will revert to the NHS. The new extension will occupy the area of the current Visitors Car Park which will be relocated to the car park in front of Richmond Building. During construction the site will be securely hoarded with approximately 75% of the Peace Garden closed and inaccessible. The gardeners will relocate suitable plants to avoid damage and on completion the Peace Garden will re-open as before.
In progress to December 2010 – Project Manager: Russell Smith (Ext 3496)
Often referred to as the CHP scheme, work has commenced in the main Richmond Building boiler house and will continue in related plant rooms across the campus with minimal impact on normal University activities. The main plant installation will take place in the autumn in the Carlton Car Park and adjacent Richmond Building, limited to the localised area equivalent to a small number of parking spaces.
In tandem with the CHP scheme essential work will take place forming a new electrical sub-station on Carlton Street, near the entrance to the University’s Car Park. There will be at least one electrical shut down of the entire city campus expected to be over a weekend or overnight in July to minimise disruption, the arrangements for this will be communicated in detail in due course.
From May 2010 to September 2010 – Project Manager: Alan Harrison (Ext 3423)
This will be the first of two phases. In this phase, accommodation will be altered for staff from TQEG and LDU to be relocated to form the Centre with new offices, a combined reception area, meeting/interview rooms and model teaching space. Areas under construction will be segregated from other University activities. The second phase to refurbish the nearby GTA will take place in the summer of 2011.
From May 2010 to September 2010 – Project Manager: Peter McCluskey (Ext 3422)
This work combines a number of alterations and improvements in Richmond Building, including the relocation of RKTS to C Floor Carlton Wing, relocation of the Graduate School to F32, relocation of HR to E Floor and upgrades to the C and D Floor corridors, Carlton Wing and to the lift lobby on C Floor. Areas under construction will be hoarded to segregate the work from other University activities. The schemes are being developed at present and we hope to commence the work over the summer.
From May 2010 to September 2010 – Project Manager: Alan Harrison (Ext 2423)
This year’s improvement works to GTA will be concentrated on upgrading Chesham B4.02 lecture theatre to bring it to the standard of our other tiered spaces. The work will be undertaken over the summer and the facility will be out of use until completed in September.
From May 2010 to July 2010 – Project Manager: Andrew Hague (Ext 5020)
Major refurbishment works are due to commence on these facilities to modernise them to meet contemporary standards. During this time the facilities will be out of use until completed.
In progress to Summer 2011 – Contact: Chris Spargo (Ext 6276)
Just over approximately 1,000 bed spaces are being created in traditional style medium rise units and innovative town house designs by a developer in an arrangement with the University. The area is partly on the site of the now demolished West End Building with adjacent car parks along Richmond Road and partly on neighbouring land acquired by the developer. The site is hoarded to separate the contractors activities from the public and University, with diversions in place. The design is aimed at achieving an Outstanding BREEAM rating (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method), and is expected to be the first student residential accommodation built to such a standard in the country.
Provisionally from August 2010 to July 2011 – Project Manager: Andrew Hague (Ext 5020)
The project will be is to construct a new building to exhibit and facilitate education into sustainable technologies and environments for visitors and the University community alongside accommodation for related start-up businesses. The building is expected to achieve an Outstanding BREEAM rating (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method), and is expected to be the first such building to reach this standard in the country. The building will occupy the space between Richmond Road and Ashfield, on the site of the current Ashfield car park. The site will be hoarded during the progress of the works for occupation by the contractors with pedestrian access re-routed around the site.
