Estates
& Facilities
The Department of Engineering, Design and Technology have been working with
our catering contractors Sodexo to make biodiesel out of our waste cooking oil
from the kitchens. This fuel is made by a simple chemical reaction with a
bi-product of the reaction being environmentally friendly soap.
Jack Bradley of EDT said ‘It makes good sense to recycle the Universities waste cooking oil. The oil would have gone to landfill and now it being put for good use helping fuel the University vehicle's.’
Our biodiesel is made from our waste cooking oil and is therefore carbon neutral. It does not have a harmful effect on the environment and we are re-using one of our waste products. Biodiesel is different to biofuel which is made from palm oil that has been criticized for massive deforestation and habitat loss.
For Green Travel Week the Department of Estates and Facilities trialled running their internal fleet using our own home made biodiesel! Once evaluated, if this trial is successful we can look at using this type of fuel as a more permanent measure.
