April's Top Tips

The end is nigh ... stop procrastinating now!

This is the time of year when final assessments and assignments are due, but it is often hard to get down to the final chapter or the really important revision.

Some people find difficulty in finishing their work because they don’t know what comes next and it’s a way of avoiding making decisions about the future.

Not getting on with things can make you feel bad and you may be beating yourself up for your inaction. If you are getting stuck, make sure you set yourself achievable goals so that you have a chance of meeting them and feeling better about yourself.

Don’t be afraid to let other people know that you are in this state – talk to your department, the LDU, the Counselling Service or a friend who will help you to get on with your work rather than distract you further.

According to Andrea Perry, all our actions, everything we do, make, create, say, move towards or away from, follows a sequence of stages known as the Action Spiral.

If you would like to discuss this or any other problem with a Counsellor please contact the service to make an appointment.

"I was really struggling to get started on my revision even though I knew that if I didn’t do any work I’d have to do re-sits – and I really wanted to get out of Bradford, I’d had enough of University. After talking to a counsellor I realised that I wasn’t sure what I was going to do when I left – I’d gone from school to college to university and never had to really think about the future, and in fact I hadn’t much of a clue. Once I’d realised this and had a chat with my mates and parents and the careers service I was able to get down to some work and happily passed my exams ok" (Final year male student).
