Academic Development to Enhance Professional Teaching

Get SMART!

What is SMART?

SMART (Skills Mapping and Reflection Tool) relates to the HE Academy’s professional standards framework and the University’s professional development framework that all staff involved in teaching and student support should satisfy.

It offers a series of statements based on the frameworks and gives you the opportunity to reflect on your teaching practice and judge your level of confidence. Having identified your strengths and areas for improvement, you can then use SMART to focus, plan and record your development.

How do I use SMART?

The SMART quick guide and the PebblePad movie on completing a profile will help you to get started. Additional support is available on our PebblePad pages.

How can I make the most of SMART?

Step 1: Initial self audit

The HEA Professional Standards Framework sets out six areas of activity. For the Foundation level of the University's Professional Development Framework, you must engage with at least two of the six areas of activity. For the Qualifying and CPD levels you must engage in all six areas.

SMART gives the you opportunity to reflect on and rate your levels of confidence in each of these areas; however, as they are quite broad; we have suggested a number of activities for each from which you might draw evidence of your teaching practice. These also serve to focus your reflection when considering your development needs. Some of these may not be applicable at this point in time, in which case you can leave them blank.

Step 2: Action plan

Having identified areas for development, you need to think how you will achieve your goals. Will you use the online resources, work with peers in ADEPT's special interest groups, attend a learning support seminar, seek more personalised support from the Teaching Quality Enhancement Group or colleagues within your school? What time commitment will you need to negotiate for this? You can use SMART to capture these ideas by creating an action plan.

Step 3: Undertake and evidence your development

As you implement your action plan, you can reflect on and review your progress by adding evidence to SMART and reviewing your original responses.

Who can see my results?

SMART is deployed via PebblePad and is personal to you; however, if you wish, you can share the results with others and/or use it as a basis for discussion at performance review. The PebblePad movie on sharing shows you how to share an asset with others.

Please note that SMART will generate statistics. These are completely anonymous and will be used to identify areas for developing more targeted support, eg learning support seminars, online resources etc.
