Professional Development and Recognition
As an educational body, the University expects teaching to be consistent and of the highest standard; to enable this, it is committed to the highest levels of professional development for its staff, irrespective of the amount of teaching undertaken or the length of time people have been teaching.

Professional Recognition
The University recognises the professional development of its staff through both accredited qualifications leading to fellowship of the Higher Education Academy and Teaching Awards.

Professional Development Framework
The University has created through consultation via the Learning & Teaching Committee, a Professional Development Framework for all teaching and learner support staff which reflects national best practice. The framework has three levels which align with the Professional Standards Framework developed by the HEA:
- Foundation Level - aimed at all regular part-time (hourly-paid), teaching associates, doctoral students and learner support staff, operating in at least two of the HEA’s areas of professional activity. This equates to Associate Fellowship under the HEA Professional Standards.
-
Qualifying Level - aimed at all new full and part-time (fractional contract) teaching staff who are required to achieve the designated teaching qualification within three years of commencing employment; this is a condition of satisfying any probationary period. This equates to Fellowship under the HEA Professional Standards.
- CPD Level - for existing staff and newly appointed staff confirmed in post following probation. This enables staff to maintain a level of professional development which is appropriate for their ongoing Fellowship under the HEA Professional Standards and also provides the opportunity for staff with particular interests and expertise to develop applications for further internal and external recognition.
Staff at this level should undertake appropriate development that can be considered in the usual manner during Annual Performance Review.
The following documents support the review of teaching and learner support and where applicable may be used to inform the performance review of academic staff:
