Her research focuses on electoral change within the EU and the political representation of national minorities.

Mohammed Sajid discussed the London terrorist attacks in ‘The gap between us; British Muslims and 7/7’, an article published in OpenDemocracy (http://www.opendemocracy.net/conflict-terrorism/london_bomb_2682.jsp).
Gabi Borz presented a paper on ‘Determinants of Party Unity in Western Europe’ at the 7th Annual Graduate Retreat of the Society for Comparative Research held at the Central European University, Budapest.
Gabi Borz and Javier Lorenzo participated in the Summer School in Social Science Data Analysis at the University of Essex.
The work of CES was highlighted in a document of the Council of the EU: SEC (2005) 364 Commission Staff Document Annex to the Report from the Commission ‘Better Lawmaking 2004’ 9COM[2004] 98 final) p.11.
On 6 May, within hours of the results being announced, CES held a panel debate on ‘The 2005 general election: results and consequences’ led by Mark Baimbridge who analysed the outcome and Roberto Espíndola who discussed the campaign, followed by contributions from Tom Gallagher, Jim Goddard and Margareta Holmstedt.
Mark Baimbridge also presented a European Research Seminar on the turnout at 2004 European parliamentary election in the EU’s new member states.
The Centre organised a panel on political parties within Europe at the Annual Conference of the Political Studies Association (PSA), held at the University of Leeds. Richard Anderson presented a paper on the French Front Nationale in France the BNP; Gabi Borz introduced a paper on party organisation, incumbency and party success in Romania; and Javier Lorenzo presented a comparison of campaigning in Spain and the UK. Roberto Espíndola chaired the panel and acted as discussant.
CES also participated in the Joint Sessions of Workshops of the European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR), held at the University of Granada, Spain, with a joint paper by Roberto Espíndola, Gabi Borz and Javier Lorenzo on electoral apathy and democracy.
Neal Ascherson, the former columnist at The Observer and The Independent and well-known analyst of East European politics, introduced one of the European Research Seminars on recent political developments in Ukraine.
Miguel Martínez Lucio presented a European Research Seminar on European Works’ Councils and the role of trade unions in European integration.
Gabi Borz and Javier Lorenzo presented papers as part of the European Research Seminars programme. Gabi introduced a discussion on ‘Party organisation and the extreme Right in Romania after 1990’, and Javier led a seminar on ‘Spanish Socialists and British Blairites: the role of political consultants’.
Roberto Espíndola and Fabio García analysed the 2004 European parliamentary election in Spain in a chapter contributed to Juliet Lodge (ed) The 2004 Elections to the European Parliament, London, Palgrave Macmillan.
Gabriela Borz has been appointed Marie Curie Fellow on Europeanisation. Gabriela is a graduate from the University of Cluj and at present a doctoral student at the Central European University at Budapest. She will spend a year at CES conducting research on Europeanisation and party behavioural unity, with particular reference to the parties of Central and Eastern Europe.
Jennifer Sands presented a paper on Organised Crime in Spain at the annual conference of the British International Studies Association (BISA) at the University of Warwick. Jennifer has also been elected to the executive of the Graduate Network of the European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR).
Professor Robert Worcester from the London School of Economics and Political Science will present a European Research Seminar on 'The US Presidential Election', discussing the election's results as well as their possible consequences for US relations with the EU and the UK.
Professor Worcester is the founder and president of MORI (Market and Opinion Research International) and holds an honorary doctorate from the University of Bradford.

Javier Lorenzo has been appointed Marie Curie Fellow on Europeanisation. Javier is a doctoral student at the Complutense University of Madrid and will spend a year at CES conducting research on a comparison between the Spanish Socialist Party and the British Labour Party.
Mark Baimbridge, Roberto Espíndola and Fabio García contributed chapters to the volume on the 2004 elections to the European Parliament edited by Juliet Lodge and published by Palgrave. Mark wrote about the elections in new member states of the EU; Roberto and Fabio covered the election in Spain.
