What is the course about?

The social work degree combines a grounding in social sciences knowledge with practical experience to enable you to enter a professional career in social work. The course balances academic and practical experience and is approved by the General Social Care Council (GSCC), the accreditation body for social work training.

Year 1

For the first year of your course you will be based entirely within the University. The aim of first year teaching is to prepare you for your first practice placement. Teaching includes an exploration of social divisions and inequalities in order to understand social problems and their attempted solutions. You will also be provided with a thorough grounding in social work skills, knowledge and values. In addition to your social work modules you will also undertake a study skills module Learning Strategies which will assist you as you undertake university level study.

Year 2

The main focus of your second year is starting to apply theory to practice in a 90-day placement. Placements are organised by the University in a variety of settings – for example, child protection agencies, family units, drug users, the elderly, mental health etc. Alongside this you will also study modules such as Law, Communication and Interviewing Skills and Mental Health which continue your professional development, allowing you to link theory to practice.

Year 3

The final year is again centred on a 110-day placement. The three associated modules are designed to complement your learning and equip you with the skills, knowledge and confidence to begin to practice as a professional social worker.

You may be entitled to financial help while studying this approved Social Work degree.
