BA (Hons) Philosophy and Sociology

What is the course about?

Joint honours programmes enable you to pursue your interest in two main disciplines. The work and assessments you undertake are at the same level as for single honours students but you focus on core modules in each discipline. These modules make up the total credits overall.

Philosophy:

You will study the main areas of Western philosophy, e.g. history of philosophy, ethics, logic & language, philosophy of mind, philosophy of the natural and social sciences. You will learn to analyze central issues, which arise from these areas and which are of central concern to human curiosity about the surrounding world.

Sociology:

Sociology is the study of human groups, their interactions and the study of social institutions and structures. You will study the main sociological schools and methods. But there will also be emphasis on current issues like gender, inequality, race and identity.

Careers:

You will graduate with a wide range of knowledge and skills. You will have learnt to analyzes complex issues with a flexible mind. Employers find these skills increasingly attractive. Graduate with a background in two disciplines will be equipped to go into a variety of careers: caring professions, journalism, law to name but a few. But there will also be the possibility of further study, perhaps for an MA or PhD
